In the early hours of a Saturday morning in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, a dispute inside a local bar escalated to a fatal conclusion for 29-year-old Yusef Ali Wilson. On April 25, 2015, at the Fifth Avenue Tavern, what began as a verbal exchange between Wilson and another man, Derrick Jermaine Boone, turned violent. The argument, reportedly over a woman, led to Wilson throwing a punch and then a chair at Boone. In response, Boone produced a handgun and opened fire.
The crowded bar descended into chaos as patrons scrambled for safety. Wilson was struck by two bullets in the torso. He was rushed to the Williamsport Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead about an hour later. Two other bystanders, a man and a woman, were also wounded in the shooting, both suffering non-life-threatening injuries to their legs. The incident prompted an outpouring of grief from friends and family who gathered at the scene later that day to release balloons and play Wilson's favorite songs in his memory.
Following the shooting, Derrick Boone fled the area, sparking a manhunt that ended with his capture in the Cincinnati, Ohio, area on May 29, 2015. Boone, who was 40 years old at the time of his sentencing, was initially charged with criminal homicide, among other offenses. Security camera footage from the tavern, though without audio, captured the tragic sequence of events. The video showed the initial argument, Wilson throwing the chair, and Boone retaliating with gunfire as Wilson was on his hands and knees.
In November 2017, Derrick Boone pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and aggravated assault. In court, he expressed remorse, stating that 'everything happened so fast.' The father of four apologized to Wilson's family before being sentenced to 12 to 30 years in prison. The Fifth Avenue Tavern, the scene of the deadly encounter, closed its doors permanently after the shooting and was later demolished.
