In the quiet community of Lower Moreland, Pennsylvania, the life of 53-year-old Kevin Brown, a male resident, was tragically cut short on the night of September 27, 2015. What began as a seemingly ordinary Sunday evening descended into a scene of violence when a home invasion turned deadly at his Philmont Avenue residence.
Around 11 p.m., assailants broke into the Brown family home. In the upstairs bedroom, a confrontation occurred, and Kevin Brown was shot.
In a desperate attempt to escape, both he and his wife leaped from a second-story window. When police arrived, they discovered Brown on the front lawn. He was rushed to Abington Memorial Hospital but was pronounced dead from a gunshot wound to the neck. Miraculously, his wife and the children who were in the house at the time were not physically harmed.
Investigators quickly determined that the home invasion was not a random act of violence, but rather a targeted attack. The motive, as it would later be revealed, was rooted in a personal vendetta. The ex-boyfriend of Kevin Brown's daughter, Naadir Abdul-Ali, was identified as the primary suspect. The breakup had been contentious, and Abdul-Ali had made threats against the family.
Within weeks of the murder, arrests were made. Naadir Abdul-Ali, then 20, and another man, 20-year-old Desmond Smith, were taken into custody. The investigation would eventually lead to the arrests of two more individuals, Abdurrahman Amin and Mujahid Mathews. The case against the four men moved through the legal system, culminating in a trial that brought some measure of closure to the grieving family and community. Naadir Abdul-Ali, the vengeful ex-boyfriend, was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison, with an additional 10 to 20 years. Mujahid Mathews pleaded guilty to third-degree murder and received a sentence of 9 ½ to 19 years. In a surprising turn of events, a jury acquitted Desmond Smith of all charges.
