Saevon Scott-Ponder, a 21-year-old male of African American ethnicity, tragically lost his life on March 24, 2016, in Pittsburgh, PA. His death was the result of a violent incident that stemmed from a drug-related debt. According to reports, Scott-Ponder owed someone 100 Xanax pills, which led to his kidnapping and subsequent murder.
On March 28, 2016, Pittsburgh police charged 21-year-old Mitchell Coles with homicide, kidnapping, and other related charges in connection with
Scott-Ponder's death. Coles' bullet-riddled body was discovered in a wooded area near Pittsburgh's Beltzhoover neighborhood. Additionally, 24-year-old Erica Harris was charged with aiding and abetting the kidnapping and conspiracy to commit murder. Harris allegedly drove the vehicle used in the crime and assisted Coles and another unidentified man in the abduction.
The investigation revealed that Scott-Ponder was at a residence on Boggs Avenue in Mt. Washington when he was forcibly taken. Surveillance footage showed Coles and another man chasing Scott-Ponder through an alley, while Harris helped force him into the vehicle. The victim was eventually led into a wooded area where he was shot multiple times.
In May 2017, Mitchell Coles and Erica Harris, along with another accomplice, Johnnie Raines, pleaded guilty to third-degree murder and kidnapping. Coles received a sentence of 20 to 50 years, Raines was sentenced to 20 to 45 years, and Harris was sentenced to 15 to 30 years for her involvement in the crime.
