In the early hours of a Saturday morning in June, the life of Daniel L. Harris, a 30-year-old man from Carlisle, Pennsylvania, was brought to a violent and abrupt end. On June 11, 2016, inside the social hall of the Haines-Stackfield American Legion Post 826, Harris was shot multiple times in what law enforcement would later describe as a targeted assassination. At the time of the shooting, approximately 20 people were present in the establishment, yet the gunman managed to flee the scene unidentified.
The investigation into Harris's death proceeded for months without an arrest. The brazen nature of the crime, carried out in front of numerous eyewitnesses, deeply troubled the Carlisle community. Authorities from the Carlisle Police Department, with assistance from the Pennsylvania State Police and the Cumberland County District Attorney's Office, diligently pursued leads in what proved to be a challenging case, as many potential witnesses were initially uncooperative.
In October 2016, a breakthrough occurred with the arrest of Robert 'Rocky' Anderson. Investigators determined that the motive behind the fatal shooting was a violent and ongoing feud between the families of Harris and Anderson. The case against Anderson proceeded to trial, and in February 2019, after more than 13 hours of deliberation, a Cumberland County jury found him guilty of first-degree murder. Following the conviction, the jury considered the death penalty but ultimately opted for a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The legal saga, however, was far from over. In September 2019, a judge made the significant decision to order a new trial for Anderson. This ruling was based on the revelation that the testimony of a key witness, which was the sole piece of evidence placing Anderson at the scene of the crime, may have been influenced by an 'implicit understanding' of receiving leniency in a separate firearms case. Despite this order for a new trial, later reports from 2025 in connection with a related crime indicated that Anderson was serving a sentence in state prison for the murder of Daniel Harris, suggesting the original conviction and life sentence were ultimately upheld.
