In the summer of 2016, a horrific sequence of events unfolded in a barn on a quiet property along Welsh Run Road in Mercersburg, not far from Greencastle, Pennsylvania, culminating in the tragic death of 36-year-old Phillip Matthew Jackson. On June 25th of that year, Pennsylvania State Police were called to Jackson's property where they discovered a brutal crime scene.
Inside the barn, they found Jackson, along with two other victims, Wendy Ann Chaney, 39, of Hagerstown, Maryland, and Brandon Cole, 47, of Fayetteville, Pennsylvania. All three had been shot, their hands bound behind their backs with zip-ties, and their bodies set on fire.
While Chaney and Cole were pronounced dead at the scene, Jackson was found clinging to life. He was immediately transported to York Hospital, but his injuries were too severe, and he died shortly after arrival. The investigation that followed unraveled a complex and ruthless plot rooted in the region's drug trade. It was revealed that Wendy Chaney was the primary target of the attack. She had been cooperating with federal authorities in a drug investigation, and her testimony posed a significant threat to a network of drug traffickers operating in the area.
The motive for the triple homicide was to silence Chaney and prevent her from testifying. Jackson and Cole were tragically in the wrong place at the wrong time, murdered to eliminate any witnesses to Chaney's execution. The investigation, which spanned nearly seven years, led to the identification and arrest of multiple individuals connected to the crime. The orchestrators of the murders had hired members of a Baltimore-based gang, the Black Guerilla Family, to carry out the killings, promising them a payment of $20,000 from a safe they believed was in Jackson's barn, along with any drugs and firearms they could find.
In the years that followed, the extensive investigation led to several convictions. Torey White, of Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, was found guilty on three counts of murder for his role in contracting the killings. Another man, Mark Johnson of Baltimore, Maryland, was sentenced to seven consecutive life sentences for his direct involvement in the murders of the three victims. Several other co-conspirators and individuals involved in the drug trafficking operation were also charged and convicted on various offenses related to the case, bringing a measure of justice to the families of Phillip Jackson, Wendy Chaney, and Brandon Cole.
