In March of 2010, the promising life of 23-year-old Diana Demayo, a white female and recent honors graduate from the University of Miami, was tragically cut short in her hometown of Detroit, Michigan. She was brutally murdered on March 11 in a downtown apartment at the Fort Shelby Tower. On that day, Demayo was helping a friend, 24-year-old Peter Dabish, move into his new residence. Dabish was the son of the co-founder of the Powerhouse Gyms chain.
Later that day, Dabish contacted the police, claiming that Demayo had suffered a drug overdose. However, when emergency responders arrived, they found her clinging to life, bearing the marks of a savage beating with multiple blunt force injuries.
Despite medical efforts, Demayo succumbed to her injuries after being placed on life support. An autopsy later revealed the grim reality: she had died from at least ten severe blows to her head. The scene within the apartment painted a horrific picture of a prolonged and violent struggle, with blood covering the area. Even Demayo's dog, a companion she had adopted during her college years, was found with its fur stained with her blood, a silent witness to the brutality.
Initially, Peter Dabish fled but eventually turned himself in to the authorities. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder and torture. During the trial, a disturbing portrait of Dabish's character emerged. Prosecutors presented evidence of his history of violent behavior, including past misdemeanor charges and testimony from former girlfriends who spoke of his threatening conduct. The motive for the murder was suggested to be rooted in jealousy over suspicions that Demayo was involved with another man. The prosecution argued that the act was premeditated, pointing to prior threats Dabish had made against Demayo and her family. He had also reportedly made harassing and obscene phone calls to her family before and after her death. The defense, in turn, suggested that Demayo's injuries could have been the result of accidental falls while she was intoxicated.
Ultimately, the jury was not swayed by the defense's arguments. They found Peter Dabish guilty of felony murder committed during an act of torture. On November 19, 2010, a Wayne County Circuit Judge sentenced him to a mandatory life sentence in prison without the possibility of parole. The case garnered significant media attention due to the extreme violence of the crime and Dabish's connection to a well-known business. Demayo's family mourned the loss of a bright and compassionate young woman whose future was stolen from her.
