On December 15, 2012, Montreal Blakely, a 17-year-old high school senior, was shot and killed in the Bayview neighborhood of San Francisco. Blakely was standing with friends on Osceola Lane around 10 p.m. when an unidentified assailant opened fire, shooting him in the head. Blakely was rushed to a nearby hospital by a friend, but he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. His death left the community in shock and mourning, particularly at Concord High School where he was a prominent member of the Minutemen football team.

Montreal had transferred to Concord High School from Mt. Diablo High the year prior, seeking a better environment for his athletic and academic development. At Concord, he was a star player on both offense and defense, known for his dedication to the sport as well as his impressive 3.6 GPA. He aspired to attend a University of California college, and those who knew him described him as hardworking and full of potential. Concord High School Principal Gary McAdam and football coach Brian Hamilton spoke highly of Blakely, emphasizing his positive attitude and appreciation for every opportunity he had earned.

Following his death, the community organized several memorial events, including a vigil at Concord High School's football field. His teammates honored his memory by initiating a charitable act of purchasing Christmas trees for families in need. Despite the investigation, the motive for the shooting remains unclear. Blakely was in San Francisco visiting his father, who lived in the Bayview district, but police did not release any suspect information at that time. The community was encouraged to provide any information that could help solve the case, with authorities relying on the cooperation of witnesses to bring those responsible to justice.
