On January 1, 2018, 23-year-old Kenyatta R. Eutsey, a male of African American ethnicity from Bethlehem, was fatally shot at a New Year's Eve party in Allentown, Pennsylvania. The incident occurred at approximately 12:39 a.m. inside a townhouse located at 1131 W. Turner St. Eutsey was shot multiple times and was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest, where he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
An autopsy confirmed that Eutsey died from gunshot wounds, and his death was ruled a homicide.
Authorities also found a second shooting victim at the scene, who was in critical condition but survived. The investigation revealed that the shooter, 25-year-old Vyante Green, opened fire during the party after claiming that his cellphone had been stolen. Green fired four shots, hitting both Eutsey and the second victim, 24-year-old Demitri Joseph, twice each. Witnesses initially thought the gunshots were firecrackers set off to celebrate the New Year due to the loud party atmosphere.
Green fled to New York after the shooting but was later arrested and brought back to Allentown. He faced charges of first-degree murder in the killing of Eutsey and attempted homicide in the shooting of Joseph. During the trial, Green claimed that he fired his gun because he believed Eutsey was reaching for a weapon. Despite his defense, a Lehigh County jury found Green guilty of first-degree murder and attempted homicide in February 2020.
In August 2020, Green was sentenced to life in prison plus an additional 20 to 40 years for the attempted homicide. The judge imposed the consecutive sentence to take effect if Green successfully appealed his murder conviction. The trial and subsequent sentencing brought some closure to the tragic events of that New Year's Eve, although the families of the victims continue to seek justice and healing.
