Joyce Fienberg, a 75-year-old female, was a cherished member of the Pittsburgh community, known for her kindness and dedication to her faith. A retired research specialist from the University of Pittsburgh, she spent her days volunteering and was a regular at the Tree of Life synagogue, especially after the passing of her husband. Her life, however, was tragically cut short on October 27, 2018, when a gunman opened fire during Shabbat morning services in the deadliest antisemitic attack in U.S.
history.
That morning, a man named Robert Bowers, armed with multiple firearms, entered the synagogue and began shooting, killing eleven people and wounding six others. Fienberg was one of the eleven victims. According to reports, she and another congregant, David Rosenthal, encountered the shooter on a staircase as they were trying to escape and were both fatally shot. The attack sent shockwaves through the community and the nation, leaving a profound sense of loss and grief.
The perpetrator, Robert Gregory Bowers, a 46-year-old at the time, was arrested at the scene after a shootout with police. His motive was rooted in antisemitism and white supremacist beliefs. Bowers was charged with 63 federal counts, including hate crimes resulting in death. He pleaded not guilty, but his defense team did not dispute that he was the shooter.
The trial, which took place years later, brought forth harrowing testimony from survivors and law enforcement. In June 2023, the jury found Robert Bowers guilty on all 63 federal charges. Following the guilty verdict, the trial entered a sentencing phase. The jury ultimately recommended the death penalty, and in August 2023, a federal judge formally imposed the sentence of death by lethal injection.
