Sylvia Williams, a 38-year-old female from Pottstown, Pennsylvania, was killed on the evening of November 18, 2018, inside her home on North Washington Street. Police were called to the residence at 351 North Washington Street after a security alarm was triggered around 6:43 p.m. When officers entered, they found Williams in a second-floor bedroom. She had suffered a gunshot wound, later described as a wound to the head, and investigators quickly began treating the case as a homicide tied to an apparent home invasion robbery.
The violence unfolded while a repairman was at the house changing the front door lock. Investigators later said two masked suspects entered the residence during that work and forced their way into the home. Inside, the situation moved fast and turned terrifying. Williams was upstairs in the bedroom with her boyfriend, and the two reportedly used an alarm remote to trigger the panic alarm. The suspects, meanwhile, were inside the home with the repairman, and what authorities believed was meant to be a robbery became a fatal shooting.
Police later alleged that Aaron Joseph Taylor and Camren Williams, who was not related to Sylvia Williams, were the two suspects who entered the home. According to investigators, Taylor went upstairs while Camren remained involved in the home invasion downstairs, including holding the repairman at gunpoint. Sylvia Williams and her boyfriend had barricaded themselves in the bedroom. Taylor allegedly tried to force his way through the bedroom door, and when he could not get inside, he fired a shot through the door. That bullet struck Sylvia Williams. Afterward, the suspects fled the home without taking anything.
The apparent motive became clearer as the investigation progressed. Authorities said the suspects believed the house belonged to a major drug dealer and had planned to rob it. When they realized they were wrong, the robbery plan collapsed, but not before Williams had been fatally shot. Her boyfriend reportedly waited until he believed the suspects were gone, then heard the repairman say it was safe. When he turned back toward Williams, she was not moving and was bleeding from the head. She was pronounced dead shortly afterward.
The investigation moved quickly because the home had a video surveillance system that captured parts of the incident, and authorities also credited public tips and police work. On November 21, 2018, Montgomery County officials released surveillance still images and asked the public for help identifying the people responsible. Six days later, on November 27, 2018, Aaron Joseph Taylor, then 18, was arrested and charged in connection with Williams’ murder. Prosecutors charged him with second-degree murder, third-degree murder, robbery, conspiracy, and possessing an instrument of crime. Bail was denied, and he was sent to the Montgomery County Correctional Facility.
Camren Williams was arrested soon afterward. He was 17 at the time of the homicide, but prosecutors announced he would be handled as an adult. He had initially faced robbery-related charges, but on December 7, 2018, authorities added a homicide charge after further investigation. Prosecutors said he and Taylor entered the home together during the attempted robbery. Although Camren was not accused of firing the shot, investigators said he worked with Taylor throughout the home invasion and later helped dispose of the pistol and clothing connected to the crime.
The case eventually resulted in prison sentences. Camren Xavier Williams was sentenced to eight to 20 years in prison for third-degree murder and related charges. Aaron Joseph Taylor was later reported to be serving 30 to 60 years for third-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and robbery connected to Sylvia Williams’ death. The arrests and convictions brought formal accountability in a case that began as a mistaken target robbery and ended with Williams killed in her own bedroom.
