In the winter of 2019, the life of 26-year-old James Jeter was cut short in a fatal shooting in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. The incident, which took place on the evening of February 27th, unfolded inside a residence on Orchard Avenue and would lead to a homicide investigation that entangled a New York teenager and two other local men.
Authorities were called to the scene at approximately 10:20 p.m. where they discovered Jeter with apparent gunshot wounds. The investigation quickly pointed to 17-year-old Lindley Thelismond of New York as the primary suspect. Police learned that an argument had erupted between Thelismond and Jeter prior to the shooting. This dispute reportedly stemmed from a conversation about their respective neighborhoods in New York and was believed to be related to gang affiliations.
Within hours of the shooting, Thelismond was apprehended by police on North 12th Street, and the handgun believed to have been used in the incident was recovered. He was charged as an adult with criminal homicide and held at the Lebanon County Correctional Facility without bail. The investigation also led to the arrests of two other men. Matthew Correia, 22, was taken into custody on outstanding warrants from Lancaster County. Richard Andino, 35, who was present at the Orchard Avenue residence during the shooting, faced multiple charges including tampering with physical evidence and several drug-related offenses.
The legal proceedings against Thelismond involved significant pre-trial motions concerning the evidence that would be presented to a jury. Specifically, there were debates about the admissibility of testimony regarding the alleged gang affiliations of Thelismond, Jeter, and Andino, as well as evidence of drug dealing. Court documents from 2022 indicate that a judge ruled to allow evidence of gang affiliation, with certain provisos, but deemed evidence of alleged drug dealings between Thelismond and Andino as inadmissible at trial.
