On December 24, 2019, 20-year-old Samir Geiger was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in an alleyway behind the 200 block of Margate Road in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators believe that Geiger, who was Black, had a Glock handgun and an iPhone, neither of which were found on his body.
Eyewitnesses reported that Geiger had received a phone call or Apple FaceTime call just before the shooting and said, "Alright bro here I come," before leaving the house. Another witness heard two male voices and then 10 to 15 gunshots. A Black male in his 20s with shoulder-length dreadlocks was seen getting into the front passenger seat of an Infiniti G35 sedan, which sped away with its headlights off.
Police later found the stolen Infiniti G35 engulfed in flames in the 1300 block of Edgehill Road. Video surveillance showed two Black males lighting something on fire and tossing it into the car. Prints belonging to Ramaj Poller and Jazmar Thomas were lifted from the vehicle.
Three men were charged in connection with Geiger's death. Jamir Hughes, Ramaj Poller, and Jazmar Thomas were all charged with criminal homicide, murder in the first, second, and third degree, robbery, and firearms and conspiracy offenses. Hughes and Poller entered negotiated guilty pleas and were sentenced to lengthy prison terms. Thomas also pleaded guilty to third-degree murder, reckless burning, tampering with evidence, and conspiracy. He received a maximum sentence of 89 years in prison.
The investigation revealed that Hughes, Poller, and Thomas had planned to rob Geiger and steal his gun to use in other robberies. The tragic incident left Geiger's family and the community devastated, with his mother remaining inconsolable years after his death.
