Shadea Johnson, a 32-year-old woman from Pittsburgh's Homewood neighborhood, was tragically shot and killed inside her home early on the morning of March 30, 2020. Police were called to the scene shortly before 2:30 a.m. after receiving reports of a shooting. When they arrived, they found Shadea with a gunshot wound, and she was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
The investigation into Shadea's death led to the arrest of 45-year-old Sanders Barber, who was charged with her murder. According to the criminal complaint, witnesses reported that Barber, who was at Shadea's house, was playing with a handgun and got into an argument with her mother's boyfriend over a game they were playing. After the boyfriend and Shadea's mother left the house, Barber allegedly shot Shadea while talking to her. Barber was not present when the police arrived, but his fingerprints were found on a can of beer at the scene.
Barber was arrested in New Jersey by the United States Marshals Fugitive Task Force in April 2020 and later pleaded guilty to third-degree murder and a firearm charge. In May 2021, he was sentenced to 15 to 40 years in state prison for his role in Shadea's death.
The case drew significant attention in the Homewood community and highlighted the ongoing issues of gun violence and crime in the area.
