On July 1, 2021, Shanyiah A. Gaines-Miles, a 10-year-old girl from Philadelphia, PA, tragically died after accidentally shooting herself with an unsecured firearm at her grandmother's house in the Kingsessing neighborhood. Shanyiah was with her father and other family members when she found a .38 revolver, which she mistook for a toy gun. The gun was loaded and had been left unsecured in an upstairs bedroom.
