On a summer day in Pittsburgh, what began as a dispute over a rental truck escalated into a senseless act of violence that claimed the life of 21-year-old Jacob Jaillet. The young man, an employee at a U-Haul facility on Washington Boulevard, was shot in the neck on July 27, 2021, by a customer who had become enraged. The customer, identified as 21-year-old Braijon Burton, had been informed by Jaillet that he could not rent a truck for the extended period he desired.
This refusal allegedly triggered Burton's violent reaction.
Following the shooting, Burton fled the scene in a stolen U-Haul pickup truck, leading police on a chase that ended in a crash on Route 28. During the pursuit, Burton also fired a shot at another vehicle, though the driver was not injured. Law enforcement was able to apprehend Burton, and he was taken into custody. Jaillet was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition, where he fought for his life for several days. Tragically, his injuries proved to be insurmountable, and he died on August 1, 2021, surrounded by his family. Doctors informed his family that the gunshot had severed his spinal cord, leaving no connection between his brain and his body. Faced with a devastating prognosis, Jaillet and his family made the decision to remove his breathing tube.
The legal process that followed brought some measure of justice for Jacob Jaillet and his loved ones. Braijon Burton was initially charged with several offenses, including aggravated assault and robbery of a motor vehicle. Following Jaillet's death, the charges were upgraded to include homicide. In February 2024, a jury found Burton guilty of second-degree murder, robbery of a motor vehicle, aggravated assault, and other related charges. On May 6, 2024, Burton was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of Jacob Jaillet. He received an additional sentence of six-and-a-half to thirteen years for the other charges.
