Raymone Wilson, a 32-year-old Black/African American man from Clairton, was fatally shot during a confrontation in Pittsburgh’s Beechview neighborhood on the night of September 3, 2021. The violence unfolded outside Universal Ventures Bar & Grille in the 1000 block of Hampshire Avenue, near the intersection of Hampshire Avenue and Methyl Street. Police said Wilson suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and was rushed to UPMC Mercy, where he died a little more than an hour after the
shooting.
Investigators determined that the confrontation had begun inside the bar. According to the criminal complaint, Wilson and 37-year-old Pittsburgh resident Darrell Raymond Mutzig had known each other for approximately ten years. The two became involved in a physical fight inside the establishment, although authorities did not publicly disclose what caused the dispute. Other patrons intervened and separated them, but the confrontation continued after the men went outside.
A witness told investigators that yelling could be heard outside shortly before gunfire erupted. Police said Mutzig later acknowledged that he was angry with Wilson, drew a firearm and shot him. According to the complaint, Mutzig also told investigators that after firing at Wilson, he stood over him and taunted him. The shooting occurred at approximately 10:50 p.m., leaving Wilson critically wounded on the street near the bar.
Roughly 15 minutes after Wilson was shot, police received another report of gunfire several blocks away on Alton Street. Officers responding to that call encountered Mutzig outside his residence. He reportedly matched the description authorities had received of Wilson’s shooter, including distinctive facial tattoos. His hands were raised, his nose was bloody, and officers observed a firearm lying on the ground about ten feet away.
While being detained, Mutzig told police that he had been punched and beaten up. According to the criminal complaint, he then asked officers whether the man he had shot was all right and acknowledged shooting him. Mutzig also told investigators that after the shooting involving Wilson, he had exchanged gunfire with an unidentified person on Alton Street. Available reports did not identify that second individual or indicate that the person was charged in connection with Wilson’s death.
Pittsburgh police arrested Mutzig and initially charged him with criminal homicide and aggravated assault in connection with the killing. Contemporary news reports described him as the accused shooter and cited his statements to police as part of the evidence supporting the charges.
