The suspect in this case, 19-year-old Malik Smith, was arrested and charged with homicide, aggravated assault, and carrying a firearm without a license. According to police reports, Smith and his group were involved in a confrontation with Perkins and Harris. The situation escalated, leading to Smith firing multiple shots in the parking lot. Perkins was shot multiple times and despite being rushed to the hospital, she did not survive.
Smith's arrest was based on evidence collected at the scene, including numerous bullet casings and a handgun found in the vicinity. Security camera footage also contradicted Smith's initial statements to the police. He later pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and a firearms violation. Smith's sentencing hearing was scheduled for October 26, 2022.
