In the East Liberty neighborhood of Pittsburgh, a sense of childhood innocence was shattered on a Monday morning in November. Four-year-old Ajani Lane, a young boy, was at his home on North Negley Avenue when a devastating tragedy unfolded. It was around 8:15 a.m. on November 22, 2021, when the sound of a gunshot echoed through the residence. First responders arrived to a heart-wrenching scene: Ajani had sustained a gunshot wound to the face.
He was rushed to a nearby children's hospital
in extremely critical condition, but despite the urgent medical attention, the little boy succumbed to his injuries a short time later. The initial investigation by Pittsburgh police suggested that the shooting was a tragic accident. It is believed that Ajani found a gun in the home and unintentionally discharged it. At the time of the incident, he was in the care of a grandparent. The home, which once held the sounds of a child's play, was now cordoned off with yellow tape, a somber testament to the life that had been lost.
As the investigation progressed, authorities were looking into whether any charges should be filed against the adults responsible for the firearm. It was later reported that two guns found in the home belonged to Ajani's father, Ronald Steave. While no charges were filed directly in connection with Ajani's death, Steave himself was later accused of a triple homicide in a separate incident that occurred on New Year's Eve of the same year. The investigation into the circumstances of Ajani's death remained open as of May 2022.
