Mecca Lavette Vaccaro, a 47-year-old woman of African American ethnicity from Monongahela, PA, tragically passed away on March 23, 2022. She was born on January 17, 1975, in Pittsburgh, PA, and was the beloved daughter of the late Frank Swindle and Rose E. Reddick. Mecca was known for her love of art, cheerleading in high school, and her dedication to her family and faith. She held various jobs over the years, including working at a daycare center, a grocery store, and a restaurant, and was most recently employed on an assembly line making cookware.
On the day of her death, Mecca was involved in a domestic dispute with her husband, Dennis Vaccaro, 65, at their home on Park Avenue in Monongahela. According to witnesses, the argument escalated, and Mecca struck Dennis multiple times before pulling a hooded sweatshirt over his head and dragging him a few feet. After the altercation, Dennis went inside the house to retrieve his keys, and during this time, he retrieved a handgun. Moments later, two gunshots were heard, and Mecca was found lying on the ground with gunshot wounds. She was transported to Penn Highlands Mon Valley Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Dennis Vaccaro was charged with criminal homicide for allegedly shooting Mecca in the stomach with his 9mm handgun. He initially claimed self-defense, but investigators found no physical injuries on his body to support this claim. In January 2023, Dennis pleaded guilty to third-degree murder and was sentenced to nine to 20 years in state prison as part of a plea deal. During the sentencing hearing, Mecca's children spoke about the impact of their mother's death on their lives and their efforts to reconnect with her before the tragedy.
