In the late spring of 2022, the search for a missing Philadelphia man came to a tragic and violent end. Frank 'Dutties' DeCero, a 25-year-old male, was last seen alive on April 26, leaving his home around midnight. Surveillance footage captured him double-parking his car, walking down the street, and getting into another vehicle which then drove away. In the days that followed his disappearance, his family grew increasingly worried.
They found his car parked on the 2800 block of South 13th Street, but he was nowhere to be found. His loved ones took to the streets and social media, posting flyers and sharing information in a desperate attempt to bring him home safely.
The search concluded in the most heartbreaking way on the afternoon of May 4. A group of juveniles flagged down police officers near 31st and Tasker streets in South Philadelphia, leading them to a grim discovery. In the bushes on Douglas Street, near the 1700 block of Vare Avenue, lay the body of Frank DeCero. The scene told a story of a brutal and merciless end. An autopsy would later reveal the extent of the violence he suffered; he had been beaten, stabbed, partially burned, and shot multiple times. A gunshot wound to his back was determined to be the fatal injury.
In the wake of the discovery, speculation arose about a possible motive, including unfounded rumors that DeCero had recently won a significant amount of money in the Pennsylvania Lottery. However, lottery officials confirmed that the winner was another individual. The investigation into his death continued, and more than a month later, an arrest was made. Joseph Rodriguez, 22, was taken into custody and faced a host of serious charges, including homicide, conspiracy, abuse of a corpse, and tampering with evidence. While an arrest was made, the motive behind the brutal killing remained undisclosed by authorities, leaving a grieving family and community searching for answers as the case awaited trial.
