In the early morning hours of July 15, 2022, a sense of unease settled over the Jollick Manor apartments in Washington, Pennsylvania, as police responded to reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered 19-year-old Antonio Nelson Martinez, a male from Clarksville, Tennessee, who had sustained gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Washington Hospital but was ultimately pronounced dead.
The investigation into the death of the teenager quickly pointed to a suspect. Less than two weeks after the fatal shooting, an arrest warrant was issued for 23-year-old Jamil “Milly” Carr. Authorities alleged that Carr played a role in Martinez's death, which was rumored to have stemmed from an altercation. Witnesses later testified that a fistfight had broken out between Martinez and Carr. It was stated that after Martinez got the upper hand in the fight, Carr pulled out a gun and shot him multiple times. Prosecutors would later argue that Carr 'brought a gun to a fistfight' because his pride was hurt after being punched.
Jamil Marquise Carr was taken into custody and held without bond at the Washington County jail. His trial commenced, and in a dramatic turn of events, a key witness for the prosecution, Glendale Smith, became hostile on the stand. Smith, who had previously identified Carr as the shooter in a preliminary hearing, claimed he couldn't remember what happened due to being 'high' on drugs at the time. Despite this, the jury was presented with other evidence, including another witness who placed Carr at the scene and comments overheard by responding officers implicating him as the shooter.
After a two-day trial, the Washington County jury deliberated for less than three hours before reaching a verdict in February 2025. They found Jamil Carr guilty of third-degree murder and prohibited possession of a firearm. While the jury was asked to consider a first-degree murder charge, they ultimately convicted him on the lesser count. Following the verdict, Carr was handcuffed and returned to the Washington County jail to await his sentencing, which was scheduled for April 30.
