Luther Brooks, a 33-year-old African American police officer in Cincinnati, OH, died on November 19, 1901. Brooks was accidentally shot while on duty. He was crawling through a tunnel at the foot of Eighth Street, searching for suspects who had been stealing from freight cars. During this search, his own gun slipped from its holster and discharged, striking him. The wound was severe, and despite medical treatment, Brooks succumbed to his injuries a few days later.
