Town Marshal George D. Elliott, aged 45, was shot and killed on October 23, 1903, in Flushing, Ohio. Elliott was attempting to quell a disturbance caused by a gang of laborers on a local street when he was assaulted and forced to retreat. He returned with a posse of five men he had deputized to assist him. During the ensuing hand-to-hand fighting, one of the possemen shot Elliott in the back, killing him instantly.
Initially, it was thought that one of the laborers had shot Elliott. However, it was later determined that the posseman had deliberately shot Elliott and tried to make it look like an accident. The posseman claimed he accidentally shot Elliott while attempting to shoot one of the laborers. The suspect was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.
Elliott's death was a tragic incident that highlighted the dangers faced by law enforcement officers in the early 20th century. His sacrifice is remembered and honored by the community and his fellow officers.
