Town Marshal George D. Elliott, aged 45, was shot and killed on October 23, 1903, in Flushing, Ohio. Elliott was attempting to quell a disturbance caused by a gang of laborers on a local street when he was assaulted and forced to retreat. He returned with a posse of five men he had deputized to assist him. During the ensuing hand-to-hand fighting, one of the possemen shot Elliott in the back, killing him instantly.
