Marshal Francis M. Thornton, age 52, was a dedicated officer of the Perrysburg City Police Department in Ohio. On December 28, 1905, while questioning five suspicious men at the town's train station, Marshal Thornton was shot in the abdomen by one of the suspects. The deputy marshal accompanying him was also injured, sustaining a gunshot wound to the foot.
