Paul Fredrick, a 26-year-old male police officer of European descent, was tragically shot and killed on February 6, 1928, while on patrol in Portsmouth, Ohio. He was shot in the abdomen by two men at around 9:30 p.m. at 11th and Monroe Streets. Despite his injuries, Fredrick managed to crawl to a police phone and request help.
One of the suspects involved in Fredrick's murder had been previously arrested by him for illegally transporting whiskey in East Portsmouth several months earlier.
Following the incident, both suspects were quickly apprehended. They were subsequently tried, convicted, and sentenced to death. The execution of the two men took place on July 5, 1928.
Fredrick had served with the Portsmouth Police Department for only nine months and was also a motor officer. He was survived by his father, two brothers, and three sisters. His dedication and ultimate sacrifice are remembered and honored by the Portsmouth Police Department and the community.
