Dennis Timothy Madden, a 23-year-old white male, was tragically shot to death on December 21, 1964, while working as a night gas station attendant at the Shell gas station on West Kemper Road near SR747 in Springdale, Ohio. Madden was married and had an infant daughter who grew up never knowing her father. The Springdale Police Department conducted a thorough investigation, interviewing numerous persons and recovering various items of evidence. Despite their exhaustive efforts, no suspects were ever charged with the crime.
The crime scene was meticulously searched, but no valuable latent prints were found. This was prior to the age of video surveillance, and no witnesses to the murder were ever identified. Investigators confiscated and test-fired dozens of pistols to compare with the bullets recovered from Madden's body. Madden's clothing was sent to the FBI for examination, and the police department corresponded with other agencies across the country. A substantial cash reward was posted by Madden's family, but the case remains unsolved to this day.
