Paulette A. Couch, a 25-year-old woman from Dayton, Ohio, tragically lost her life on May 24, 1975. She was one of the victims of a violent spree killing carried out by Russell Lee Smith, who also took his own life on the same day. Smith killed two people, including Couch, and wounded nine others during his rampage. The incident began when Smith and his girlfriend, Joan Marie Gatewood, drove to a local motorcycle club.
Smith confronted Joseph Pickett, whom he suspected of dating Gatewood, and a heated argument ensued. Smith then shot Pickett and later killed Gatewood and Couch.

Russell Lee Smith had a troubled past, marked by numerous arrests for various crimes, including drunkenness, armed robbery, auto theft, and attempted breaking and entering. He had also been previously convicted of first-degree manslaughter and spent time in prison before being released on probation. Psychiatrists who examined him during his time in prison noted that he exhibited traits of a sociopathic nature and would react violently in stressful situations.
