Patrolman Richard Elton Becker, aged 36, was a dedicated officer with the Poland Township Police Department in Ohio. On the night of November 6, 1983, Becker was on routine patrol when he received a report of a suspicious person near a bar on State Route 170. Responding to the call, Becker began investigating the area on foot. Unfortunately, due to the darkness, he initially missed the suspect. However, when the complainant pointed out the suspect's location, Becker turned around and was shot in the chest with a 12-gauge shotgun. He was transported to South Side Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries approximately one hour later.
The suspect fled the scene and traveled to Winchester, Virginia, where he ultimately took his own life the following day. Becker had served with the Poland Township Police Department for over four years and was survived by his wife, son, and daughter. In recognition of his service and sacrifice, Route 170 in Mahoning County was renamed the Poland Township Police Officer Richard E. Becker Memorial Highway in December 2017.
Becker's death was a tragic event that deeply affected his family, friends, and fellow officers. His dedication to his duty and the ultimate sacrifice he made in the line of duty are remembered and honored by the community and law enforcement agencies.
