Brittany A. Stykes, a 22-year-old woman from Brown County, Ohio, was tragically shot and killed on August 28, 2013. She was on her way to celebrate her father's birthday with her 18-month-old daughter, Aubree, in the car. Brittany was also pregnant at the time. Her vehicle was found parked off the side of U.S. Route 68, and her daughter was discovered bleeding from a gunshot wound to the head, still strapped into her car seat.
Despite undergoing multiple surgeries, Aubree survived, but the child Brittany was pregnant with did not.
The Brown County Coroner's Office determined that two bullets hit Brittany, and at least three struck the driver's side door of her vehicle. One bullet hit her neck, which would have been superficial if it had been the only injury, but the second bullet punctured her lungs and traveled through her body. Toxicology results showed no drugs or alcohol in her system, and she had all her jewelry and about $125 in cash on her when her body was found.
Despite extensive investigations, no arrests have been made, and the case remains unsolved. The Brown County Sheriff's Department has continued to follow leads and has even offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to a conviction. The community and Brittany's family have expressed frustration over the lack of answers and continue to call for justice.
