William Walker, a 45-year-old African American man and a lieutenant in the Cleveland Fire Department, was tragically shot dead outside his home in Cleveland, Ohio, on November 3, 2013. Walker had recently married his girlfriend of two years, Uloma Curry-Walker, after she claimed to have late-stage breast cancer. However, it was later revealed that her diagnosis was a ruse to gain access to his health insurance benefits.
On the night of his death, Walker was returning home after picking
up dinner when he was ambushed and shot four times in the chest. His wife, Uloma, who was present at the scene, called 911 but did not attempt to revive him. Suspicious behavior and evidence led the police to investigate Uloma further. They discovered that she had maxed out several of Walker's credit cards and was in significant debt.
The investigation uncovered that Uloma had conspired with her daughter and several other individuals to have Walker murdered for financial gain. She offered $10,000 to her daughter's boyfriend, Chad Padgett, to carry out the murder. Padgett, in turn, recruited Ryan Dorty to commit the crime. Dorty ambushed Walker as he was unlocking his side door, shooting him with a 9mm pistol provided by Padgett.
Uloma Curry-Walker was eventually convicted of aggravated murder, felonious assault, and conspiracy in connection with her husband's death. Her daughter and the other accomplices also pleaded guilty and testified against her during the trial. The case, which shocked the community, highlighted the lengths to which Uloma went to secure financial stability through deceit and murder.
