Dean Ochi, a 43-year-old male of Japanese ethnicity, was found dead on August 7, 2014, in Mayfield Heights, Ohio. Ochi, who served as a contracted athletic trainer from the Cleveland Clinic at Mayfield High School, was facing multiple felony charges at the time of his death. He had been indicted on 14 felony counts, including 10 counts of sexual battery, one count of disseminating material harmful to a minor, and three counts of illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material. The allegations involved an inappropriate relationship with a 17-year-old female student.
On the night of his death, Ochi left his home with a handgun and drove to a location near Knollwood Cemetery. His body was discovered just after 1 a.m. by a police officer who found his car parked near Miklus Florist. Ochi appeared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and a handgun was found near his body. The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's office confirmed that Ochi's death was a result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
There were no arrests or suspects involved in Ochi's death, as it was determined to be a suicide. The case did not lead to any further litigations or murder investigations. A candlelight vigil was held in his memory at Mayfield High School, attended by friends, family, and community members.
