His death was the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound during a standoff with law enforcement officers who were investigating a marijuana growing operation on his property. The incident occurred after authorities, using a helicopter, spotted the marijuana plants and approached Sturgis, who was armed with an assault rifle and a pistol.
