On November 19, 2014, Abdullah Nagi Mahdi, a 29-year-old male of Middle Eastern descent, was tragically killed in a shootout at his store, Reemas Fashions, located at 2608 South Avenue in Youngstown, OH. Mahdi, who was the owner of the store, was shot in the head during an exchange of gunfire with Larry McDonald, a 19-year-old suspect who had entered the store with the intent to rob it.
The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. when McDonald walked into the store, acting suspiciously.
Employees, who were aware of a previous robbery at another Reemas Fashions store owned by Mahdi on Belmont Avenue the day before, alerted Mahdi. Mahdi, who had a gun in the store, confronted McDonald, leading to the exchange of gunfire. Mahdi was fatally shot in the head, while McDonald was hit twice in the stomach and later hospitalized before being transferred to the county jail.
Larry McDonald was subsequently indicted on charges of aggravated murder, murder, and aggravated robbery in connection with Mahdi's death. He also faced additional charges of carrying a concealed weapon. McDonald was arraigned in municipal court and held in jail on a $1 million bond.
