Billy Joe Sickler, a 29-year-old man from Hamilton, Ohio, tragically died on December 16, 2015, from a gunshot wound outside his home. Sickler, who was born on December 9, 1986, in Ridgecrest, California, was found suffering from his injuries early in the morning and was later pronounced dead at Fort Hamilton Hospital. The Butler County Coroner’s Office ruled his death a homicide.
The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. when Sickler was shot outside his residence on East Avenue.
According to his mother, Tina Grzelak, Sickler struggled with addiction to crystal methamphetamine and heroin. He had a history of arrests related to drug abuse, domestic violence, and operating a vehicle under the influence . In the days leading up to his death, Sickler faced a petty theft charge.
Hamilton police responded to the scene and found Sickler with a gunshot wound. His uncle, William Sickler, reported hearing yelling and seeing three suspects running away from the scene. The suspects were believed to have attempted to rob Sickler, but they fled without taking anything.
In May 2016, Jamell Cavanaugh was arrested and charged with murder in connection with Sickler's death. Cavanaugh faced additional charges related to weapons under disability and felony drug offenses. The investigation into Sickler's death was part of a broader effort by the Hamilton Police Department to address violent crime in the area.
Sickler's death marked the fifth homicide in Hamilton in 2015, with three remaining unsolved. The community and Sickler's family were deeply affected by his loss, as he was remembered as a loving individual who brought joy to those around him.
