Daniel Sanford, a 28-year-old male from Youngstown, OH, tragically lost his life on September 5, 2016. He was found dead inside his home on Belden Avenue after a home invasion. The incident occurred around midnight, and Sanford was discovered with fatal gunshot wounds.
Three men were indicted in connection with Sanford's death: Vincent Reber, 21, Derrick Reber, 19, and Lorenzo Hilton, 26.
All three were charged with aggravated murder, aggravated robbery, and aggravated burglary with firearm specifications. The charges carried potential life prison sentences. Vincent and Lorenzo Reber were treated at Trumbull Memorial Hospital for injuries sustained in an alleged gunfight before being arrested. Derrick Reber fled to Pittsburgh but was later arrested and awaited extradition.
The case was particularly painful for Sanford's family. His brother, David Blackwell, expressed the emotional toll the loss had taken on him and his young nephew, who now had to grow up without a father. Sanford's mother, Sharon Blackwell, also spoke out in court, describing the profound grief and emptiness she felt since her son's death.
In court, Vincent Reber's conviction was initially overturned on appeal, but he eventually pleaded guilty to the charges and received a sentence of 20 years to life. The other two men involved also received similar sentences.
