Sunny Ravi Patel, a 15-year-old male of Indian ethnicity, tragically lost his life on October 14, 2016, in Cleveland, OH. Sunny was working at his family's Mr. Hero sandwich shop in Cleveland Heights when he was shot by an armed robber, Daveion Perry, who was 20 years old at the time. Sunny was a sophomore at Mayfield High School and was known for his hardworking and caring nature. He was also an avid Cleveland Cavaliers fan.
Daveion Perry entered the Mr.
Hero restaurant just before 8 p.m. and shot Sunny Patel within seconds of entering. After shooting Sunny, Perry held Sunny's uncle at gunpoint and demanded money from the cash register. Sunny's cousins and parents provided victim impact statements during the court proceedings, expressing the profound loss and pain caused by Sunny's death. Perry was later sentenced to life without the possibility of parole for his actions.
In addition to the murder charge, Perry was also charged with aggravated murder, two counts of felonious assault, two counts of aggravated robbery, and two counts of kidnapping for his involvement in the robbery and subsequent crimes at a Subway shop and a Dollar General store. Perry pleaded guilty to all charges in exchange for the prosecution dropping the death penalty. During his sentencing, Perry expressed remorse and asked for forgiveness from Sunny's family.
The community responded to Sunny's death with an outpouring of support. Mayfield High School students organized a candlelight vigil and wore Cleveland Cavaliers attire to honor Sunny's memory. A Go Fund Me campaign was also created to help cover funeral expenses and other costs, raising over $37,000. The funds were later donated to several organizations close to Sunny's heart.
The Cleveland Heights Police Department played a crucial role in apprehending Perry and bringing him to justice. The community, along with local clergy and officials, organized a prayer vigil to support Sunny's family and honor his memory. The tragic loss of Sunny Ravi Patel left a lasting impact on his family, friends, and the entire community.
