John Campbell, a 48-year-old Caucasian male from North Canton, OH, tragically passed away on December 11, 2016. He was the Chief Deputy at the Stark County Sheriff's Department and had a long and distinguished career in law enforcement. Before joining the sheriff's department, he served with the Ohio Investigative Unit for over 20 years.
On the day of his death, Campbell was at his home in Lake Township when an accidental discharge of a firearm occurred. The bullet went through an interior wall and struck him while he was in another room. Authorities determined that the shooting was accidental and not the result of foul play. The investigation was conducted by the Summit County Sheriff's Office, as requested by the Stark County Sheriff's Office due to Campbell's status as one of their own.
There were no arrests, suspects, or litigations related to Campbell's death, as it was ruled an accident. The Stark County Sheriff's Office and the North Canton Police Chief both expressed deep sorrow over the loss and praised Campbell for his dedication and service.
Campbell is survived by his wife, Tami L. Campbell, and their two sons, John M. Campbell and Joshua A. Campbell. He is also remembered fondly by his siblings, Rick Amelung, Gloria Cress, Sue Paxson, Lynn Campbell, and Donna Streight, as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.
The community and law enforcement agencies mourned the loss of Campbell, who was known for his kind heart, dedication to his family, and commitment to his work. His funeral was held on December 19, 2016, at the Reed Funeral Home in North Canton, followed by interment at Heritage Memorial Garden in Minerva.
