In the autumn of 2024, a quiet suburban street in Rochester Hills, a suburb of Detroit, Michigan, became the scene of a meticulously planned and brutal crime that ended the life of 72-year-old jeweler Hussein Murray, a male also known as 'James' or 'Sam.' The harrowing ordeal began when two men, posing as DTE energy workers, attempted to gain access to the Murray residence, claiming they needed to investigate a gas leak. The couple initially turned them away, but the men returned the following day, and were granted entry into the home.
Once inside, the imposters, later identified as Carlos Juan Hernandez and Joshua Zuazo, lured Hussein Murray to the basement under the guise of checking the gas lines. It was there that they bound him with duct tape and zip ties and beat him to death. The cause of death was later determined to be asphyxiation due to neck compression and blunt force trauma. After killing Murray, the two men went upstairs and attacked his wife, Linda Murray. She was bound and beaten while the assailants demanded money and jewelry. The men ransacked the home, stealing some valuables before fleeing the scene. Despite her injuries, Linda Murray managed to free herself and call for help after the intruders left. When authorities arrived, they discovered Hussein Murray's body in the basement.
The investigation into the murder quickly gained momentum, aided by home security footage that captured images of the suspects. Carlos Jose Hernandez was apprehended in Louisiana just days after the murder, and his accomplice, Joshua Zuazo, was arrested in Plymouth, Michigan, shortly thereafter. The investigation revealed that the men had targeted Hussein Murray because he was a jeweler and they believed there would be cash and valuables in his home. It was also discovered that Hernandez had visited Murray's jewelry store in Hamtramck prior to the home invasion.
Both Hernandez and Zuazo were charged with felony murder and two counts of unlawful imprisonment. They were tried in the same courtroom but with separate juries. In October of 2025, after hearing testimony from Linda Murray, investigators, and other witnesses, both juries returned guilty verdicts on all charges. The following December, Carlos Hernandez and Joshua Zuazo were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of Hussein Murray. They also received a sentence of 19 to 80 years for the unlawful imprisonment convictions. During the sentencing, the judge condemned the men's actions as 'pathetic' and a 'cowardice act,' while Hussein Murray's family delivered emotional impact statements, describing the profound and lasting pain caused by their loss.
