On July 25, 2017, Columbus Police responded to a report of a shooting in the 1600 block of Smith Road on the city's southeast side. Upon arrival at approximately 3:20 p.m., officers discovered James Lundy, a 31-year-old African American male, lying unresponsive in a yard. Emergency medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene at 3:32 p.m.
Investigations revealed that James Lundy had been involved in a physical altercation with 22-year-old Zhontel M.
Angel, also an African American male. The dispute centered around a woman who was both the mother of Angel's child and the daughter of Lundy's fiancée. During the confrontation, Angel retrieved a firearm and shot Lundy multiple times, resulting in his death.
Following the incident, Zhontel M. Angel was arrested and charged with murder. This case marked the 76th homicide in Columbus for the year 2017.
James Marquis Lundy Sr. was remembered as a devoted family man who leaves behind two children and his fiancée. His death was a tragic loss for his family and the community.
