Ashley Marie Newman, a 30-year-old woman from Groveport, Ohio, tragically lost her life on January 1, 2018. She was fatally shot by her husband, Sean M. Newman, age 32, at their residence in the 4000 block of Yukon Avenue. The incident occurred on New Year's Eve, around 11:30 PM, when police received a 911 call reporting a shooting. Ashley was found suffering from a gunshot wound to the head and was rushed to Grant Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead shortly after midnight.
Sean Newman fled the scene after the shooting but was later found after crashing his car on I-270 near Alum Creek Drive. He was charged with murder and taken into custody. The Franklin County Grand Jury indicted him on two counts of Murder with Specification and two counts of Felonious Assault. However, Sean Newman eventually pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of voluntary manslaughter. In court, he claimed that the shooting was accidental, occurring while he was playing with a gun inside their home.
In August 2019, Sean Newman was sentenced to 13 years in prison for the voluntary manslaughter of Ashley Marie Newman. The judge accepted a joint recommendation from the prosecution and defense for the 13-year sentence.
This tragic case marked the first homicide of 2018 in the Groveport area. The community and authorities were deeply affected by the loss of Ashley Marie Newman, and the incident prompted a thorough investigation and legal proceedings to bring justice for her death.
