Thomas Lewis Maul Jr., a 21-year-old African American male, was fatally shot on June 1, 2018, in the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood of Cincinnati, Ohio. He was found dead in the courtyard of an apartment complex in the 200 block of East Clifton Avenue. The tragic incident occurred just days before his 22nd birthday.
The investigation into Maul's death was extensive and prolonged.
In March 2019, his family offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for his murder. Despite their efforts and the passage of time, it wasn't until July 12, 2021, that Cincinnati police arrested Eric Johnson, a 23-year-old man, for his alleged involvement in the shooting. Johnson was charged with murder and is currently awaiting his first court appearance.
Maul's family has expressed both relief and sorrow over the arrest. While they are grateful that Johnson is behind bars, they continue to grieve the loss of a beloved family member who was known for his helpful nature and his dedication to volunteering and supporting others. Maul's father, Thomas Sr., described his son as a wonderful kid who always kept everyone around him smiling with his jokes and his bright smile.
