Surrell Gaines, a 14-year-old African American male, was fatally shot on July 30, 2018, in Cincinnati's Mount Auburn neighborhood. He was discovered dead near the corner of Vine and Thill streets just before 5 p.m. Gaines was a freshman at Hughes STEM High School, known for his love of basketball and described as "fun-loving, kind," and a positive influence on other students.
