On March 30, 2019, Sylvia McGhee, a 14-year-old girl from Canton, Ohio, was tragically shot and killed near 11th Street SW and Bieyl Court SW. She was found with a gunshot wound to the back of her head and was pronounced dead at the scene. Sylvia was known to her family and friends as a "ray of sunshine," always able to light up a room. She aspired to be a hairstylist and was looking forward to getting her work permit.
The investigation into Sylvia's death led to the arrest of two
teenage boys, aged 13 and 14. The 13-year-old boy was charged with aggravated murder and obstruction of official business for lying to police. He entered a "not true" plea, equivalent to a not guilty plea, and was held in custody. The 14-year-old boy was also identified as a suspect but was not charged or taken into custody.
In January 2020, the 13-year-old suspect, Isaiah Lynch, pleaded true to the charges, admitting to the shooting. He claimed he believed Sylvia was pregnant with his child, which was not true according to an autopsy. Isaiah was sentenced to youth prison until he turns 21, with the possibility of serving additional time as an adult.
The case drew significant attention and community support, including a candlelight vigil held for Sylvia at the Southeast Community Center in Canton. The tragedy highlighted the ongoing issue of gun violence and its impact on young lives. Sylvia's family continues to seek justice and answers for her untimely death.
