Hakikat Panag, a 59-year-old Sikh man, tragically lost his life on April 28, 2019, in a quadruple homicide at the Lakefront at West Chester apartment complex in West Chester, Ohio. Along with him, his wife Parmjit Kaur , their daughter Shalinderjit Kaur , and his sister-in-law Amarjit Kaur were also killed. The victims were found by Jasminder Singh, a family friend, who made the distressing 911 call reporting the incident.
The investigation revealed that Gurpreet Singh, a former truck
driver and the husband of Shalinderjit Kaur, was the prime suspect. He was arrested and later extradited back to Ohio after fleeing the scene. During the investigation, evidence such as blood, gunshot residue, and DNA linked Singh to the crime scene. GPS data placed him in the apartment complex's parking lot shortly before the murders. Singh's financial troubles and a romantic relationship with a woman out of state were cited as possible motives.
The case went to trial, and in October 2022, the jury was unable to reach a verdict, resulting in a mistrial. A second trial followed, and this time, a three-judge panel convicted Singh of four counts of aggravated murder. He was subsequently sentenced to death. Despite the conviction, the execution remains uncertain due to Ohio's current halt on the death penalty.
The community was deeply affected by the tragedy, and a service was held at the local Sikh gurdwara to pray for the victims. The case remains a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the impact of violence on families and communities.
