Qua’Lek Shelton, a 15-year-old African American male from Dayton, Ohio, tragically died on February 16, 2020. On the day of his death, Shelton and another teenager were shot by someone in a vehicle while they were walking on Catalpa Drive.
The suspect in the case, Jackeem Collins, a 19-year-old from Mason, Ohio, was charged with murder, felonious assault, and weapon charges. According to court records, Collins claimed he fired the gun into the air and did not intend to hurt anyone. However, prosecutors alleged that Collins shot randomly into a group of teenagers, resulting in Shelton's death and the injury of another 16-year-old boy. Collins was later sentenced to 25 years in prison for involuntary manslaughter and felonious assault.

Collins' defense team attempted to suppress his statements made to police, arguing that they were not voluntarily given.
