Tremell Jones Jr., a 21-year-old African American male from Cincinnati, OH, tragically lost his life on April 29, 2020. He was affectionately known as "Beans" to his family and friends. Beans was known for his love of sports, especially basketball, and was a beloved member of his community. He attended Lockland and Princeton City Schools and graduated from Taft High School in 2017.
On the evening of April 29, 2020, Beans was shot and killed on North Wayne Avenue near Maple Street in
Lockland, OH. First responders transported him to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office and the Lockland Police Department launched an investigation into his death.
Authorities quickly identified Demetri Smith, a 26-year-old male, as the suspect in Beans' murder. Smith was arrested early on May 2, 2020, after a series of events that included shots being fired outside the LivINN Hotel in Sharonville, OH. Smith was found armed and hiding on the hotel property when police arrived. He was charged with murder and held on a $1 million bond.
The investigation revealed that Smith fled to Sharonville after shooting Beans and hid at the hotel. Another man, Antonius Carter, was also found at UC Medical Center with a gunshot wound and was expected to face charges related to the hotel incident. Smith denied the allegations of the fatal shooting in court.
