On July 24, 2020, 23-year-old Devontay Stanton, an African American male from Columbus, OH, was tragically shot and killed inside a home located on the 2600 block of Audubon Road. Stanton was found by police and rushed to Grant Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The suspect in the case, 23-year-old Jaylon Walker, was arrested on August 15, 2020, and charged with murder, felonious assault, kidnapping, and improper discharge of a firearm into a habitation.
Walker was also charged with two additional counts of robbery and grand theft of a firearm from unrelated incidents. In December 2021, Walker was convicted on all charges except for intimidation of a witness, for which he was found not guilty.
In January 2022, Walker was sentenced to 41 years to life in prison for the murder of Devontay Stanton. The case marked the 73rd homicide in Columbus for the year 2020.
The investigation and subsequent legal proceedings brought some measure of justice for Stanton's family and friends, who mourned the loss of the young man who was known for making everyone around him happy.
