Rodney Lemar Reavish Jr., a 50-year-old African American man from Columbus, Ohio, tragically passed away on July 14, 2022. Rodney, also known as "Rod," was well-loved in his community for his jovial nature and his passion for cooking. He had worked as a head chef at Waffle House after earning his GED and studying culinary arts. Rodney is survived by his daughter, Querida Reavish, and his grandchild, Arliss Williams II, with another grandchild on the way.
Rodney's death was part of a
double homicide that occurred outside the Van Buren Emergency Shelter in South Franklinton, Columbus. The incident took place just before 11 p.m. on July 14, 2022, when Rodney and 36-year-old Amanda Perkins were fatally shot. The suspect, 34-year-old Christopher Smith, was arrested the following day after police reviewed video footage from the scene and received information from community members. Smith was charged with two counts of murder and a $1 million bond was set for his release.
The shooting was believed to have stemmed from a confrontation that occurred earlier that night. The Columbus Division of Police, along with the YMCA of Central Ohio, which operates the shelter, worked diligently to investigate the crime and ensure the safety of shelter residents. The tragic event marked the 69th and 70th homicides of the year in Columbus.
Rodney's family and friends continue to mourn his loss and remember him for the joy and love he brought into their lives. The community has come together to offer condolences and support to those affected by this senseless act of violence.
