On August 9, 2020, 24-year-old African American male Ky'Ron Demetrius Lamar Cannady was fatally shot during a family dispute in a Dayton, Ohio apartment. The incident occurred around 11 p.m. in the 1000 block of Salem Avenue. According to Dayton police, the altercation stemmed from an argument over the purchase of a bottle of alcohol. The disagreement escalated into a physical confrontation, culminating in Cannady being shot multiple times.

Witnesses at the scene identified 25-year-old Perry Maurice Rolandus Thompson Jr., also an African American male and Cannady's cousin, as the shooter. Thompson was seen fleeing the scene in a silver Chrysler 300. Law enforcement agencies, including the Dayton Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Southern Ohio Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team, initiated a manhunt. On August 20, 2020, Thompson was apprehended in Dayton. A 20-year-old woman, Tod’janaye Smith, who was with him at the time, was taken in for questioning.
Following his arrest, Thompson faced multiple charges: two counts of murder, two counts of felonious assault, and one count of having weapons while under disability due to a prior drug conviction. In July 2022, Thompson entered a guilty plea to involuntary manslaughter, tampering with evidence, and having weapons under disability. Subsequently, in August 2022, he was sentenced to a prison term ranging from 18 to 23½ years and was ordered to pay restitution for Cannady's funeral expenses.
