On August 19, 2020, 22-year-old Keyshawn Turner was fatally shot in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio. Turner, who was Black, was shot in the chest at around 8:45 p.m. outside the public library at 8th and Walnut streets. He was taken to UC Medical Center but did not survive his injuries.
Shortly after the shooting, police arrested 25-year-old Quantez Wilcox and charged him with murder. Wilcox was held on a $1 million bond.
According to police, Wilcox shot Turner during a confrontation that occurred after Wilcox had been talking to a woman near the library. Wilcox claimed he acted in self-defense, but prosecutors argued that his story was self-serving and inconsistent.
In August 2022, Wilcox was sentenced to 26 years to life in prison for the murder of Turner. The judge in the case, Jody Luebbers, imposed the sentence after a jury found Wilcox guilty of multiple counts, including murder. Wilcox's attorneys argued that he feared serious physical harm from Turner, but the prosecution maintained that Wilcox's actions were not justified.
The case drew significant attention and highlighted issues of gun violence and self-defense claims in the city. Turner's death and the subsequent legal proceedings underscored the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement and the judicial system in addressing such incidents.
